This is our shooting schedule for our production Siezer (teaser trailer). As you can see it is a 5 day production time period which takes place in two major places one of which is Canary Wharf. Not only does this location bring a sense of realism into our production, but it is also a bit problematic. We aren't usually allowed to film in the city and so may get stopped by police and so we will need to take our college ID so that we are able to film.
22)INT. ROOM OF A HOUSE CELLAR – NIGHT <<COLOUR SCHEME>>
A dark room with no sign of life. A bright light turns on. TWO men come from either side of the light, helping in hiding the brightness from the light. The characters are in silhouette. The two characters seem to stare into the camera. A man takes a gasp.
Man 1
Well...
CUT TO:
Richard Smith on a seat with his hands and feet tied to the seat. The light is shined on him. His head looks down and comes back up.

CUT TO:
Man 1 lifts his hand up and threatens to give Richard Smith a punch. Man 2 gets in the way of Man 1 and holds him back. Aggressive motions are made by the man who wants to harm Richard Smith.
CUT TO:
POV/Over the shoulder shot of Man 2.
Man 2
He will talk, soon enough.
The men leave and turn the lamp light off. The room is left in the darkness.
This is a screenplay for a scene that will appear in our production.
This is our final Storyboard. It shows a few key shots that we intend in using in our production. The first shot is a establishing shot of London City where the film is based. The second shot is a car following our main character Richard Smith. The third shot on the Storyboard is a shot of Richard's father and the Hitman who is going to save him. The fourth shot is the interigation scene which has Richard Smith in a dark room. The fifth shot is of a point of view shot of a punch. The final shot is of the Hitman holding a gun to another character.
These shots may not be included in the teaser trailer and definately not in the order but they will be filmed.
By doing product research and with our knowledge of films of similar film genres, we were able to add key scenes into our trailer sequence. We have added a shot of our main character in a dark room, who gets interrogated. We saw these types of scenes in 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'James Bond - Casino Royale'. In these films, the protagonist is interrogated in a dark room and creates a lot of suspense and tension which is what we need to create in our own trailer. We also added the idea of the father of our protagonist is his business manager. This helps create a sub story but we will not be mentioning this in our trailer. We have also chosen to try make the production companies fit in with the colour's of our production, this is what our product research showed us. Finally, from our product research, we have seen that trailers for this genre of film tell a different story to what may happen actually in the film and so that is why we have left out many ideas and tried to show an Action genre film but our idea show other genres which we don't want to show.
For our media studies project, we are making a teaser trailer at our school Ernest Bevin College. We are writing to you to ask you if we can use the song ‘Intro’ from the XX Album by The XX which is a part of your record label Young Turks.
We understand that you are the owner of the song, but due to our low budget we would like to use the entire song to help us create an exciting tone to our teaser trailer which has the working title ‘Seizer’.
If this is not possible, please let us know what fee would be required for the use of your song.
Your signature below indicates that you have given us permission to use your song in our production. You can reach us at our college by asking for our supervisor Mr.Dickie.
Thank you for your cooperation

This is an email we had to send to Young Turks production label because we would like to use a piece of their music and for copyright reasons, we can't just take it.
We did two forms of audience feedback, two survey's and a focus group. From the survey's we were able to ask the audience on how to set the mise-en-scene for our interrogation scene. We asked this question because we had never made an interrogation scene before and we needed to know what to incled in that scene. Also we used our survey to help us understand what our target audience like for example if they would buy an Iphone will tell us we need to make our film more luxurious and more main stream like the film taken. From our focus group we learnt that we had a good plot but it was confusing to some people and so we need to improve our plot. Also they like our interrogation scene and so we should include the interrogation scene in our trailer or atleast shots of it in our teaser trailer as many people like the interrogation scene.
For our teaser trailer, we need a few characters to help us create our main product. These are the characters we are going to need and their names. Lee - Hitman Richard Smith - Protagonist Riley - Interrogator Samuel - Interrogator Mr Jackson Willson - Business Owner Jason - Chaser
Our production has an Action-Thriller film genre which has some key props that we may need.
This is an image of the Hitman character in the well known game Hitman. The use of guns in this frame has had in impact in our decision to want to use a gun in our production. This is a key prop used in many Action films and so it will help convey the conventions of our film. Also, one of our protagonist is a Hitman and so using a gun will help us convey a hirman character.
Also, we take our inspiration of using a brief case from the well known, main stream film, Collateral. In this film, the use fo a brief case helps create suspense and tension in the film as the audiecne are drawn into the object and hinder on what is inside it. Tension are suspense are two themes which we need to create in our own production and so using a brief case could help us in creating these conventional themes.
In our production, business is a key theme. Usually people dress smartly if they work for a business and so we will have Richard Smith and his Boss dressed smartly in suits. For Richard Smith, we may make his suit a bit more casual as he is a young businessman. Our other protagonist is a Hitman figure and we take his costumes inspiration from the film Hitman.
We would like our Hitman figure to be dressed just like this. We would want a red tie as it is isociated with danger. We would also like the black leather gloves which creates mystery so we may also want our character to wear gloves.
This is our first moodboard which show a number of themes that are involved in our production. There are numerous images of London city because of the buisness theme that is the backbone of our storyline. London is the service and buisness capita and so having a buisnessman working in London, we are creating a high status image for our protagonist. There is an image of a degree scroll and education books under a graduation hat. This image is used as it shows that our protagonist has a high education showing how he has got to where he is now. The images of suits show a formal and safisticated person which is who our protagonist is going to be portrayed as. There is a image of money because money is the reason for Richard getting into this mess.
There are two other images which show another side to our film. The Hitman poster is shown because this sort of character is in our film. The final image is of a dark room with a chair, we are hoping to use a room like this for where Richard is kept captive as it is very mysterious and intense.
We have chosen a dark background as we feel as this is going to be the general tone of our production.
London, 2013, Richard Smith is a business man who works for a big investment company but little does he know that his boss has done illegal things to other companies. Richard is on his way home from a meeting with another company who is interested in the firm and suddenly he is grabbed and thrown into a car. The kidnappers want Richard to either frame his boss or give his boss to these people. Richards has no choice or say in this matter. If Richard slips it won’t be just his life that’s in danger.
TREATMENT:
Richard Smith is a hard working, businessman who has taken a long time to get to where he is with a lot of hard work and preservation. His boss is a man who has done a lot of illegal dealings to make his business successful and Richard is his assistant but, Richard has never seen or taught of his boss doing illegal dealings to get the business to where it is now. One afternoon, after a meeting with the members of a firm interesting in investing into the business, he is then taken.
Richard Smith is left tied up to a chair in a dark room with one door and no windows. Richards’s boss finds that Richard hasn’t been at work for a couple of days and starts getting worried. His boss wants to help find Richard and uses a very close friend to find Richard. His friend is an assassin/Hitman used to protect him. A sequence of fighting and searching leads to Richards’s boss’s close associate finds Richard but a final twist happens during this moment.
Richard goes through a tough life and doesn’t even know who his father was, yet he finds himself at gun point. His father is hinted at the end of the film.
From our focus group we learnt that some of the people we interviewed liked the name Seizer and liked how we were making a twist on the main stream film Taken. We also found that our focus group liked our idea of having an interrogation scene in the film. What people didn't like about our plot and idea was that it was a bit cliched and that it didn't make sense to all our focus group and so we found ourselves having to constantly repeat the plot. Also one member didn't like the name Seizer as it made her think of the emperor Ceaser instead of the meaning of seize.
Question 1 - What is your gender? We asked this question so that we can get to know the proportion of female and male people answering our questionnaire.
Question 2 - What is your age? We asked this question because depending on our responses age, they may have different veiw points.
Question 3 - Did a trailer you watch meet the expectations of the film? Name the film and give a reason? By asking this question we will be given a list of films that produced a successful trailer. This will help us in taking key ideas from these trailers to improve our teaser trailer.
Question 4 - Have you seen a trailer which you liked, but been dissapointed with the film? Name the film and give reson why? This is the inverse question to the previous question. By asking this question, we will be able to identify which trailers were unsuccessful and to be sure to not include the key things in those trailer to put in our own production.
Question 5 - Which of these pieces of clothing do you think a Hitman character should wear? The responses we recieve for this question will help in developing our final costume for our Hitman character.
Question 6 - Ifa scene were to be done in the dark to create mystery would you have a...? We asked this question because a multiple scenes in our film is show an interigation between characters and Richard Smith. This scene must be very mysterious and create tension. By asking this question, we will be able to get a response to which scenery creates the most tension and mystery for our film.
Question 7 - In an Action trailer, what else apart from action would you expect to see ? This question will help us fill in any details we missed which we should include in our trailer.
Question 8 - Any other comments you would like to make on how we could make a Action-Thiller genre trailer? Anything you believe we should include? Again this question helps us in filling in any points we missed out in our film production teaser trailer.
The genre of our film is Action-Thriller. There are certain conventions to a Thriller genre that we will have to use which are to create suspense. We can create suspense using different trailer patterns. The first trailer pattern we could use is the 'Character-Driven' trailer. This trailer pattern concentrates on a single or group of people who have a huge impact on our media production. This is shown in films that have a comic book adaptation like the 'Avengers' and Batman. Our film protagonist is a young businessman. He could be described as an:
A young, naive businessman who doesn't take anything for granted
A father figure that is involved in dangerous side of life
Boss with extra-ordinary friends
Years of curiosity
We could use these phrases to describe our character in our teaser trailer production.
Another trailer pattern is a 'Plot Driven' teaser trailer. In this trailer pattern, the audience are compelled to viewing or listening to there favourite character and finding our hints to there characters role in the film. This trailer pattern could link with our film plot as we can make our trailer centred around our main protagonist but we have 3 protagonist. This will create mystery and suspense about our other characters if we decide to base our trailer on one of our protagonist.
A common trailer pattern is a 'Trigger-Event' teaser trailer. This trailer builds up slowly to a change in the plot which triggers other things to happen in the film. This is used commonly in Action-Thriller genres which is the genre of our film. We can build up a story in our trailer and then have a point where the story all changes and so the teaser trailer changes in pace or story. This can help create suspense and tension as our audience will be confused and would want to find out more about our film.
The final trailer pattern in a 'Theme centred' teaser trailer. In our film production, we have many themes but our main themes are violence and justice. However if we concentrate on a teaser trailer pattern on certain themes, we may give away to much of our film.
I believe for our production, we will be using a mixture of all these teaser trailer patterns. By doing so, we can pick the most helpful aspects of each pattern for our film production so we can make a better teaser trailer. Inevitably we are trying to make a teaser trailer that makes our audience want to see more and we believe this can be achieved by using a mixture of trailer patterns.
Our film is an urban drama based film, so we are going to be filming in urban areas.
This is an area in Brixton where we plan on using one of these areas shown for our production. We want to use an estate because one of our protagonist is a gang member and gangs mainly hang around estate areas as that is where they grow up. Also this indicates a sort of poor background which usually leads to violence and stealing and links to the reasoning of why one of our protagonist is a gang member.
Our other protagonist is a student who is planning on going on to university so we also need to use a school setting. The school we have chosen to use is Ernest Bevin College.
This is our school so it will be easy to film at school without having to sort out permission and sorting out times to meet.
We will also be using other locations which we haven't discussed as of yet.
Click here to take survey Question 1 What is your age? We would like to know our responses ages because we want to know if age has any effect on certain choices.
Question 2 What is your gender? We believe it is nessacery to ask the responses gender because it could lead to biased opinions. Based on gender certain answers could be put down and so we need to take into account biased or sexist opinions. Question 3 How often do you veiw teaser trailers? From this question, we can see weather our respondent veiws teasers enough. This response is to just see weather many people in our target audience are into teaser trailers.
Question 4 How often do you go to the cinema? This question gives an insight into our respondents hobbies as going to the cinema is considered a hobby. If they respond poorly to this question, then we will know weather or not to include this hobby into our film.
Question 5 What genre of film do you like to watch the most? This question is going to help us reinforce the idea of us to make a Thriller genre film.
Question 6 How do you find out about teaser trailers? This question enables us to find out whether our target audience is as keen as we are about films. Again it is to get an insight into our target audience.
Question 7 What method of watching film do you do the most? This question helps us to again understand the background of our respondents.
Question 8 Do you believe using London city is a good place to film? This question will help us decide whether or not to use London as our main location. This again is to enforce our original decision.
Question 9 What would you expect an Assassin/Hitman to wear? This response is going to help us in how to dress our hitman protagonist.
Question 10 How would you expect an Assassin/Hitman to appear? This will help us in completing our characters characteristics in our film. This will not only help us complete our character, but it will also help us mould a script around this character. .
The teaser trailer to this eagerly awaited film starts of with the green screen. This is a usual feature for all types of trailers as it lets the audience know that what they are viewing is of suitable contect and that it isn't fake. The first shot is of a very fimiliar actor, Leonardo DiCapprio, which idicates to the audience that this is going to be a character driven teaser trailer. Also from his clothes and his acsent, the audience is aware that this film is a western film. The first line in this teaser is 'Boy what is your name?' this has a reply of 'Django'. This creates questions for the audience as they wonder on what Django's relivence to the film is as his name is also in the title. This helps create mystery and suspense. The next shot is of Jamie Foxx (who plays Django) stating his name and then another shot of him shotting at something. This indicates the Action genre present in the film to the audience. After these shots, the production logos appear with a high pitched western soundtrack in the background. After the production company logo's, the teaser continues with a conversation between Jamie Foxx's character in the background with Christopher Waltz who is another weel known actor. With the conversation in the background, the audience veiw a selection of shots in the film which helps them piece together the plot of the film. After these shots, a superimposed message appears over a shot in silute. These superimposed words remind the audience that the film is directed by Quentin Tarantino who is a famous director who also directed Pulp Fiction. After this the audience see a selection of Action and plot related shots. These shots help create excitement but also hints at the plot which helps create suspense. The trailer nears to the end by showing a still of all the famous characters used in this production. This inforces the character driven trailer and it also draws in different target audiences who may not have come to see this film but will as they have seen there favourite actor or actors appear in this production. We as an audience can tell that the actors involved in the film are its major selling points. The title of the film appears in black font and a dusty. brown background which indicates the time of the film and the western genre. The teaser ends with converstaion between the three main characters which hints to the audience there may be a happy ending.
This teaser is quite plot and character driven and so we think we are going to take some ideas from the speackes involved in this teaser that create suspense and mystery and try and create these themes in our own production.
The teaser trailer starts of in the same manner as every other teaser trailer. It starts with a green screen which all official trailers have to ensure viewers what they are viewing is appropriate. The teaser opens with the two production logo's,one of the logo's is lionsgate. Lionsgate doesn't have a conventional colour scheme as it usually emulates the mood or tone of the film. The use of red and dark colours could indicate to the audience that the film could contain violence and danger. The sequence then continues to a conversation between two well know actors, Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone. During this conversation, there is no music playing in the background. This increases the tension and causes the audience to listen deeply to what is being said in the conversation. The conversation told a bit of a plot which seems to happen at the beginning. The plot leads to Bruce Willis ending the conversation with 'You owe me'. This could be some sort of conversation which introduces the action packed film that fans are waiting for. After this conversation, the Expandables logo appears with weapons making circular motions around it. The weapons indicate the Action genre of the film and the audience are aware of all the action they are waiting to see. The next part of the teaser creates excitement as the teaser shows a shot of all there favourite characters with there names separating each shot of Action. This builds excitement and suspense for the audience as the audience don't get to see all the action in the sequences shown which creates suspense.
This teaser trailer is very character orientated which helps create excitement for the audience.
As our film is an Action sequence, we can take the idea of using a character orientated teaser pattern to help create suspense and excitement to help lour our target audience to come and watch our production and make our teaser more interesting. We could also use the idea of a conversation which helps slowly gather the audiences attention at the beginning of the teaser trailer. This will help create tension for our audience.
Red Knowledge - We have chosen this title because in our film production, Richard Smith knows too much about the buisness he works for. In the film there is a competing business that want to take over the business Richard Smith works for. This is why his knowlegde is dangerous/red and why he gets taken in the film.
An Old Mans Enigma - This could be a possible title because the film is based on the mistakes made by Richard Smith's boss and so its his boss's enigma. Hence why we have used Old Man. This however makes our film seem as if its not a Thriller but a life story of a man which could help in making our audience puzzled.
Seizer/R - This could be our film name. We came up with this name by using he root word sieze which means take. This theme is in our production because Richard Smith gets taken and interigated. We added the 'r' so we can make it sound like the word Ceaser. Ceaser is associated with great leaders who take there side to victory. This is shown by our endding changing the lives of people in our production in both good and bad ways. This title has a double meaning and so it could help make our audience puzzled and want to see the film. We are debating whether to have the 'r' in upper or lower case. We will be asking our target audience in our focus group.
The Dark Knight is the sequel to the Batman Begins by Christopher Nolan. The teaser trailer to this film reflects on the style of film that were made by Christopher Nolan.
The teaser trailer starts with the green screen as shown. This just indicates to the audience that the teaser trailer has been authorised to be viewed and doesn't contain content that is not wanted. The following shots are the labels of the two production companies that have produced the film. They are Legendary Pictures and Warner Bro. However, to make the teaser trailer for this comic book adaption to stand out as it's own label, the teaser making company have decided to colour coordinate their entire trailer. They have done this by changing the colours of the production company logo's to black and grey, which is colour coordinated with the Batman clothes and symbol. As the production logo's appear, a low, organ type instrument plays in the background as a non-diegetic sound. This gives a gloomy and fierce mood to the teaser which is enforced by the use of only black and grey colours. After the production logos, the teaser becomes completely black and the non-diegetic sound of the soundtrack plays in the background. We then hear a conversation that includes the voice of the films protagonist, Bruce Wayne/Batman. The audience is able to recognise his voice from the previous films. As the conversation gets more intense, the audience is introduced to a bright light which seems to fly over the camera shot. This creates suspense for the audience as the light could symbolise anything in the film and as it is the only movement in the teaser so far, it could indicate that there is something mysterious in the film which may happen. The conversation continues in the background with the non-diegetic sound. The conversation includes a talk between Bruce Wayne and his Butler, Alfred, who talk about a danger to Gotham. This is followed by other characters speaking. The general tone to this filmdue to this conversation is danger and tension. The audience is hearing there favourite characters
talking about how they were going to help save the city. This creates suspense and tension as the audience wonder who is creating this problem for Gotham city and why isn't the Batman helping. This then leads to the shot on the left, where the Batman logo slowly appears with the help of more bright lights as shown before. The teaser then increases
the tempo of the non-diegetic sound in the background. The teaser company has done this by adding drum beats to the soundtrack. These two conventions help intensify the fee of an upbeat. This could indicate to the audience that there could be an uprising as the Batman logo appears which is the symbol of the audiences hero. The conversation comes to the end and Alfred says 'some men, just want the world to burn.' At this point, the Batman logo starts to break away as shown. This could indicate a fall to the Batman or that whoever Alfred is talking about has succeeded in defeating Bruce Wayne.
The lights in the background appear more frequently, however, the audience is then introduced to the voice of the opposing gang and the Joker. At this point, the soundtrack stays the same with the emphasis on the upbeat sound in the background made by drums or another percussion instrument. The difference is that bigger peaces of the batman logo break away. This is then ended with one of the pieces turning around and showing a Joker card. This is instigated by the Joker saying, 'I'm a man of my word' which is followed by his unique laugh. For Batman followers, they will recognise that the card is to do with the evil villain which is talked about for a bit in this trailer, however, for those who aren't followers of the film, they are left in suspense and just remember the card as a symbol which is very beneficial for the film and the audience as it creates rhetorical questions for some audiences.
The soundtrack continues and the teaser trailer finishes with two black screens. The first screen shows the name of the film and the second shows the day of release with production companies and sponsors logo's. The dark background could suggest that this film is mysterious and by not actually showing the audience anything from the film, the teaser has left the film in mystery and created suspense.
This teaser is quite conventional. It does tease the audience and creates a lot of suspense and mystery. I believe this is the main targets of the teaser which have been achieved. Although, I believe that the use of no footage is the main idea to take from this and this idea is unconventional. This teaser trailer would have also been cheap so the producers haven't put the financial backing in this teaser trailer. But this teaser trailer works very well for the film as it hints at themes like danger and struggle which helps keep the audience in suspense.
Poster
This is the poster for the Dark Knight. The poster composes the protagonist in the centre of the poster. This shows that the Batman is the man in control and as he is shown from a low angle shot, it could mean that he is superior and has power over whatever villain he faces. The poster has a cloudy background which creates a gloomy and dull mood. This indicates that the city is in trouble or that the citizens are not happy. There is a tall building which is breaking away. This could indicate that the city has fallen. The gloomy and unhappy tone created by this poster shows a contrast by the bright red Batman logo standing out above of everything on the tower. The logo is made out of fire and it could indicate to the audience that above all the trouble and danger caused, the Batman will be there to fight it. The title is composed beneath the Batman with the batman logo in the middle of the title. This is to increase the use of the key symbol that followers of the film can recognise. Above this, there are the name of the actors who play the characters in the film. This is a key selling point of the film which helps branch out to other audiences that aren't familiar with the batman theme. The final part of the poster is the bottom part which has the production company and sponsors and the date of the films release. In this poster, the villain is not portrayed. This may have been done by the artist to create suspense and to not give a lot away about the film.
The general theme of the poster is that the Batman faces danger and with the audience unaware of his opponent, they are left to speculate on whether he wins his battle which they know is going to happen due to the dark colours and the use of red which are commonly related to war, the audience are left to believe that there will be a fight or war in this film.
Magazine Covers
This is the magazine cover by Empire magazine for this film. The headmast is unconventional from the usual magazine cover headmast. This is because the title colour is usually red but, due to the theme's in the Dark Knight and the colours of the Batman, Empire magazine have decided to change the title colour to suit the theme of the film which helps audiences recognise the film. The magazine also has a sell line which helps attract readers to buy the magazine. There is also a coverline on this magazine cover with a barcode on the right hand side at the bottom. The picture of the Batman is a close up of his face and the image is composed in the centre of the magazine cover. The image shows no expressions. This could indicate that the Batman has something serious to do in the film and as it is a close up of him, he can't hide from it. The main colours used in this magazine cover are black, blue and white. This could suggest that the film has a dangerous and mysterious theme to the film. This magazine cover follows the Z-pattern which most magazines have. This shows that this particular magazine is conventional apart from the headmast. The headmast also states that there are 2 covers to collect. This is for collectors.
This is the second magazine cover for the same issue. Everything on the magazine covers are the same but the colour and the image. The image for this magazine looks a lot more sinister. This may be to do with the fact that this character is a villain and because he has a very sinister part in the film. The image is composed in the same fashion as the first magazine cover. The colour scheme on this poster is black, white and green. These colours could suggest an evil and a slimy character. Both of these magazine covers have the common theme of mystery. This is mainly due to there is only one character on each magazine cover which keeps the mystery of the film as they are the only two characters shown.
Comparison
The genre of this film is Action-Thriller. All these products have the common theme of mystery and suspense. This is created by the dark colour scheme and the common themes of danger and evil conveyed by most of these products.
However, the teaser and the poster don't show the villain to the film which helped create suspense to what the Joker or villain looked like. The magazine does show this. Empire may have decided to do this to try to get more people buying the magazine for the film. Apart from the magazines, the products show or have the Batman logo. This logo is a symbol comic fans attract to and it is a symbol that symbolises something to first time viewers of the film, which could be used to create suspense for those audiences.
These products all show a common theme. My group could use these connections because we have a similar genre to this film. We could use the same colour scheme throughout all of our products which we will be producing. The colour scheme will help us in conveying a mysterious and tense theme in our products. We could also use the idea of creating a symbol or logo for our audience to help create suspense as the logo does for these Batman films.
Finally, I think that these products all help the film project which has helped make this film successful. The main idea that we will be taking is that there is nothing being shown from the film in the teaser trailer. This will help us to create suspense in our teaser trailer and will then help us with our other products.
Time period and Industrial effect
The production company may have chosen to pick Christopher Nolan as the director based on his previous work. This has helped in transforming Batman from previous Joel Schumacher Batman (which was a bit camp and had many bright colours), into this Batman which is more serious and dark. This shows a change of time periods and shows what people have grown to like in film.
Also, Batman was never a cheerful or entirely successful vigilante which what this new production company is trying to convey. They are showing the side of Batman which they believe to be right for the enjoyment of the comic book audience.
The industrial effect is caused many due to the production company wanting to make money and satisfy its audience.
