The Empire magazine cover which has Captain America on it's cover contains some conventions of a film magazine cover and other features which appeal to the audience the film is made for. We know that this magazine is an Empire magazine because the title of the magazine is clearly shown in the masthead. However, this masthead is not conventional. Readers of the Empire magazine will be able to see that for this edition, the colour of the magazine title has been changed. Conventionally, the magazine title is red, but in this edition, the title of the magazine is white. This could make this edition more difficult to find as readers may be looking for the red title more commonly used. The magazine title Empire maybe in a different colour on this occasion because it could hint the tone of the film. The colour white is usually associated with calm and harmonious atmospheres. The colour white could also suggest mystery. In the film, there is a calm atmosphere which is coated with Captain America's ambition to get into the army. The magazine cover has Captain America on the cover who is the main character from the film Captain America: The First Avenger. This is one of the conventions of a film magazine cover. This is effective as it shows to the audience the main character of the film and he is centred on the cover which draws attention to him. The main image is also in front of the background making it stand out. The centred image is also in front of the title Empire. Empire is a big magazine company but this magazine cover suggest that Captain America is bigger than anything on the page hence why he is composed in front of everything on the page apart for his own name. The background is the American flag which links to the name of the marvel hero and so links with the name of the well known marvel character. The effect of having a flag in the background can also suggest that Captain America is loyal to his country in the film and he obeys by the rules as most nations like America, run on human morals, rights and rules. Also the main figure is a well known actor Chris Evans. Having Chris Evans as the protagonist will help draw a wide range of fans of him as an actor. Also, more females maybe interested into the film because Chris Evans is the protagonist. There is also a yellow circle which says 'Meet Marvels First Avenger'. This indicates to the audience that there is probably an interview with Chris Evans inside the magazine which could inspire fans of him or the film to buy the magazine. There is also a slogan underneath Captain America which states 'How summer's biggest superhero went to war'. This creates a sort of hype towards the magazine as it excites the audience to want to read more about it in the magazine and find out more than what is on the cover.
Overall, the magazine cover is very centralised towards Captain America but there are small things on the cover like slogans and comments which draws the attention of the audience. For our film magazine cover, I think we should do the same type of image to draw the attention of our audience.
