Analysis of Django Unchained teaser trailer

The teaser trailer to this eagerly awaited film starts of with the green screen. This is a usual feature for all types of trailers as it lets the audience know that what they are viewing is of suitable contect and that it isn't fake. The first shot is of a very fimiliar actor, Leonardo DiCapprio, which idicates to the audience that this is going to be a character driven teaser trailer. Also from his clothes and his acsent, the audience is aware that this film is a western film. The first line in this teaser is 'Boy what is your name?' this has a reply of 'Django'. This creates questions for the audience as they wonder on what Django's relivence to the film is as his name is also in the title. This helps create mystery and suspense. The next shot is of Jamie Foxx (who plays Django) stating his name and then another shot of him shotting at something. This indicates the Action genre present in the film to the audience. After these shots, the production logos appear with a high pitched western soundtrack in the background. After the production company logo's, the teaser continues with a conversation between Jamie Foxx's character in the background with Christopher Waltz who is another weel known actor. With the conversation in the background, the audience veiw a selection of shots in the film which helps them piece together the plot of the film. After these shots, a superimposed message appears over a shot in silute. These superimposed words remind the audience that the film is directed by Quentin Tarantino who is a famous director who also directed Pulp Fiction. After this the audience see a selection of Action and plot related shots. These shots help create excitement but also hints at the plot which helps create suspense. The trailer nears to the end by showing a still of all the famous characters used in this production. This inforces the character driven trailer and it also draws in different target audiences who may not have come to see this film but will as they have seen there favourite actor or actors appear in this production. We as an audience can tell that the actors involved in the film are its major selling points. The title of the film appears in black font and a dusty. brown background which indicates the time of the film and the western genre. The teaser ends with converstaion between the three main characters which hints to the audience there may be a happy ending.
This teaser is quite plot and character driven and so we think we are going to take some ideas from the speackes involved in this teaser that create suspense and mystery and try and create these themes in our own production.

Analysis of Expandebles 2 teaser trailer

The teaser trailer starts of in the same manner as every other teaser trailer. It starts with a green screen which all official trailers have to ensure viewers what they are viewing is appropriate. The teaser opens with the two production logo's, one of the logo's is lionsgate. Lionsgate doesn't have a conventional colour scheme as it usually emulates the mood or tone of the film. The use of red and dark colours could indicate to the audience that the film could contain violence and danger. The sequence then continues to a conversation between two well know actors, Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone. During this conversation, there is no music playing in the background. This increases the tension and causes the audience to listen deeply to what is being said in the conversation. The conversation told a bit of a plot which seems to happen at the beginning. The plot leads to Bruce Willis ending the conversation with 'You owe me'. This could be some sort of conversation which introduces the action packed film that fans are waiting for. After this conversation, the Expandables logo appears with weapons making circular motions around it. The weapons indicate the Action genre of the film and the audience are aware of all the action they are waiting to see. The next part of the teaser creates excitement as the teaser shows a shot of all there favourite characters with there names separating each shot of Action. This builds excitement and suspense for the audience as the audience don't get to see all the action in the sequences shown which creates suspense.
This teaser trailer is very character orientated which helps create excitement for the audience.
As our film is an Action sequence, we can take the idea of using a character orientated teaser pattern to help create suspense and excitement to help lour our target audience to come and watch our production and make our teaser more interesting. We could also use the idea of a conversation which helps slowly gather the audiences attention at the beginning of the teaser trailer. This will help create tension for our audience.

Possible Film Titles

  • Red Knowledge - We have chosen this title because in our film production, Richard Smith knows too much about the buisness he works for. In the film there is a competing business that want to take over the business Richard Smith works for. This is why his knowlegde is dangerous/red and why he gets taken in the film.
  • An Old Mans Enigma - This could be a possible title because the film is based on the mistakes made by Richard Smith's boss and so its his boss's enigma. Hence why we have used Old Man. This however makes our film seem as if its not a Thriller but a life story of a man which could help in making our audience puzzled.
  • Seizer/R - This could be our film name. We came up with this name by using he root word sieze which means take. This theme is in our production because Richard Smith gets taken and interigated. We added the 'r' so we can make it sound like the word Ceaser. Ceaser is associated with great leaders who take there side to victory. This is shown by our endding changing the lives of people in our production in both good and bad ways. This title has a double meaning and so it could help make our audience puzzled and want to see the film. We are debating whether to have the 'r' in upper or lower case. We will be asking our target audience in our focus group.

Product Analysis - The Dark Knight (2008)

Teaser Trailer

The Dark Knight is the sequel to the Batman Begins by Christopher Nolan. The teaser trailer to this film reflects on the style of film that were made by Christopher Nolan.
The teaser trailer starts with the green screen as shown. This just indicates to the audience that the teaser trailer has been authorised to be viewed and doesn't contain content that is not wanted. The following shots are the labels of the two production companies that have produced the film. They are Legendary Pictures and Warner Bro. However, to make the teaser trailer for this comic book adaption to stand out as it's own label, the teaser making company have decided to colour coordinate their entire trailer. They have done this by changing the colours of the production company logo's to black and grey, which is colour coordinated with the Batman clothes and symbol. As the production logo's appear, a low, organ type instrument plays in the background as a non-diegetic sound. This gives a gloomy and fierce mood to the teaser which is enforced by the use of only black and grey colours. After the production logos, the teaser becomes completely black and the non-diegetic sound of the soundtrack plays in the background. We then hear a conversation that includes the voice of the films protagonist, Bruce Wayne/Batman. The audience is able to recognise his voice from the previous films. As the conversation gets more intense, the audience is introduced to a bright light which seems to fly over the camera shot. This creates suspense for the audience as the light could symbolise anything in the film and as it is the only movement in the teaser so far, it could indicate that there is something mysterious in the film which may happen. The conversation continues in the background with the non-diegetic sound. The conversation includes a talk between Bruce Wayne and his Butler, Alfred, who talk about a danger to Gotham. This is followed by other characters speaking. The general tone to this film due to this conversation is danger and tension. The audience is hearing there favourite characters
talking about how they were going to help save the city. This creates suspense and tension as the audience wonder who is creating this problem for Gotham city and why isn't the Batman helping. This then leads to the shot on the left, where the Batman logo slowly appears with the help of more bright lights as shown before. The teaser then increases
the tempo of the non-diegetic sound in the background. The teaser company has done this by adding drum beats to the soundtrack. These two conventions help intensify the fee of an upbeat. This could indicate to the audience that there could be an uprising as the Batman logo appears which is the symbol of the audiences hero. The conversation comes to the end and Alfred says 'some men, just want the world to burn.' At this point, the Batman logo starts to break away as shown. This could indicate a fall to the Batman or that whoever Alfred is talking about has succeeded in defeating Bruce Wayne.
The lights in the background appear more frequently, however, the audience is then introduced to the voice of the opposing gang and the Joker. At this point, the soundtrack stays the same with the emphasis on the upbeat sound in the background made by drums or another percussion instrument. The difference is that bigger peaces of the batman logo break away. This is then ended with one of the pieces turning around and showing a Joker card. This is instigated by the Joker saying, 'I'm a man of my word' which is followed by his unique laugh. For Batman followers, they will recognise that the card is to do with the evil villain which is talked about for a bit in this trailer, however, for those who aren't followers of the film, they are left in suspense and just remember the card as a symbol which is very beneficial for the film and the audience as it creates rhetorical questions for some audiences.
The soundtrack continues and the teaser trailer finishes with two black screens. The first screen shows the name of the film and the second shows the day of release with production companies and sponsors logo's. The dark background could suggest that this film is mysterious and by not actually showing the audience anything from the film, the teaser has left the film in mystery and created suspense.

This teaser is quite conventional. It does tease the audience and creates a lot of suspense and mystery. I believe this is the main targets of the teaser which have been achieved. Although, I believe that the use of no footage is the main idea to take from this and this idea is unconventional.
This teaser trailer would have also been cheap so the producers haven't put the financial backing in this teaser trailer. But this teaser trailer works very well for the film as it hints at themes like danger and struggle which helps keep the audience in suspense.

Poster

This is the poster for the Dark Knight. The poster composes the protagonist in the centre of the poster. This shows that the Batman is the man in control and as he is shown from a low angle shot, it could mean that he is superior and has power over whatever villain he faces. The poster has a cloudy background which creates a gloomy and dull mood. This indicates that the city is in trouble or that the citizens are not happy. There is a tall building which is breaking away. This could indicate that the city has fallen. The gloomy and unhappy tone created by this poster shows a contrast by the bright red Batman logo standing out above of everything on the tower. The logo is made out of fire and it could indicate to the audience that above all the trouble and danger caused, the Batman will be there to fight it. The title is composed beneath the Batman with the batman logo in the middle of the title. This is to increase the use of the key symbol that followers of the film can recognise. Above this, there are the name of the actors who play the characters in the film. This is a key selling point of the film which helps branch out to other audiences that aren't familiar with the batman theme. The final part of the poster is the bottom part which has the production company and sponsors and the date of the films release. In this poster, the villain is not portrayed. This may have been done by the artist to create suspense and to not give a lot away about the film.
The general theme of the poster is that the Batman faces danger and with the audience unaware of his opponent, they are left to speculate on whether he wins his battle which they know is going to happen due to the dark colours and the use of red which are commonly related to war, the audience are left to believe that there will be a fight or war in this film.

Magazine Covers

This is the magazine cover by Empire magazine for this film. The headmast is unconventional from the usual magazine cover headmast. This is because the title colour is usually red but, due to the theme's in the Dark Knight and the colours of the Batman, Empire magazine have decided to change the title colour to suit the theme of the film which helps audiences recognise the film. The magazine also has a sell line which helps attract readers to buy the magazine. There is also a coverline on this magazine cover with a barcode on the right hand side at the bottom. The picture of the Batman is a close up of his face and the image is composed in the centre of the magazine cover. The image shows no expressions. This could indicate that the Batman has something serious to do in the film and as it is a close up of him, he can't hide from it. The main colours used in this magazine cover are black, blue and white. This could suggest that the film has a dangerous and mysterious theme to the film. This magazine cover follows the Z-pattern which most magazines have. This shows that this particular magazine is conventional apart from the headmast.
The headmast also states that there are 2 covers to collect. This is for collectors.

This is the second magazine cover for the same issue. Everything on the magazine covers are the same but the colour and the image. The image for this magazine looks a lot more sinister. This may be to do with the fact that this character is a villain and because he has a very sinister part in the film. The image is composed in the same fashion as the first magazine cover. The colour scheme on this poster is black, white and green. These colours could suggest an evil and a slimy character. Both of these magazine covers have the common theme of mystery. This is mainly due to there is only one character on each magazine cover which keeps the mystery of the film as they are the only two characters shown.

Comparison

The genre of this film is Action-Thriller. All these products have the common theme of mystery and suspense. This is created by the dark colour scheme and the common themes of danger and evil conveyed by most of these products.
However, the teaser and the poster don't show the villain to the film which helped create suspense to what the Joker or villain looked like. The magazine does show this. Empire may have decided to do this to try to get more people buying the magazine for the film. Apart from the magazines, the products show or have the Batman logo. This  logo is a symbol comic fans attract to and it is a symbol that symbolises something to first time viewers of the film, which could be used to create suspense for those audiences.

These products all show a common theme. My group could use these connections because we have a similar genre to this film. We could use the same colour scheme throughout all of our products which we will be producing. The colour scheme will help us in conveying a mysterious and tense theme in our products. We could also use the idea of creating a symbol or logo for our audience to help create suspense as the logo does for these Batman films.

Finally, I think that these products all help the film project which has helped make this film successful. The main idea that we will be taking is that there is nothing being shown from the film in the teaser trailer. This will help us to create suspense in our teaser trailer and will then help us with our other products.

Time period and Industrial effect

The production company may have chosen to pick Christopher Nolan as the director based on his previous work. This has helped in transforming Batman from previous Joel Schumacher Batman (which was a bit camp and had many bright colours), into this Batman which is more serious and dark. This shows a change of time periods and shows what people have grown to like in film.
Also, Batman was never a cheerful or entirely successful vigilante which what this new production company is trying to convey. They are showing the side of Batman which they believe to be right for the enjoyment of the comic book audience.
The industrial effect is caused many due to the production company wanting to make money and satisfy its audience.

Ideas

Our production is of a Thriller genre. We have develpoed an idea about the background of our characters that we are going to use in our production. We think that it would be a good idea to have Richard Smith's father to be the man he works for. But Richard Smith doesn't know his father. This helps us in createing a reason for why he sends his assassin/hitman to retrive him.
By creating this connection we have filled a gap in the film. However, we will not be making a refrence to this in our teaser trailer. This is only to help make the film flow.

Analysis of Skyfall Poster

The poster composes James Bond, (Daniel Craig), in the centre of the poster. This draws the attention of the audiences straight away as it is a large image of a well-known character. This image shows James Bond holding a gun which indicates to the audience that he is in battle. Also it makes reference to the Action genre in this film. In the background of the poster, there is a still from all Bond films that only Bond followers will recognise. It is a still of the gun barrel that is used in every Bond film opening. This is a very clear symbol to Bond followers and so it attracts a certain audience. In one of the sections in the background, there is the image of London city. This indicates to the audience that this film will remain in London unlike previous films which tend to leave London. This could also be another selling point as some people may like the idea of using London as a setting. This isn't a colourful image in the background, it is qutie dull which could indicate the mood of the film. The title of the film is composed in the bottom half of the page. It is composed infornt of the image which shows it has more importance and a bigger selling point than Daniel Craig. The font of the title is very conventional which shows that this is a serious film with no hidden themes. The font colour is grey which enhances a dull tone to the film. Under the heading is the numbers 007. This again can only be understood by those who have followed Bond as they can tell this is his agent number. The final part of the poster shows all the production companies and cast that haev made this film followed by  the date of release. the colour scheme used on this poster is black, white and orange which convery the themes of mystery and confusion. The orange could influence the readers acknowledgement that this film is an action film.
Our production conveys a main protagonist who has a similar role as Daniel Craig. This is why my group shall consider using this character driven poster to emphasise the story of our protagonist as this poster has.

Product Analysis - Fast Five (2011)

Teaser Trailer

The teaser trailer to this film starts off quite conventionally. After the green screen. There is an establishing shot of where the film is set, Rio - Brazil. As this is the 5th film in this series of Fast and Furios, the audience will be aware that this film may not be like the other 4 films. This is because 3 of the other films were shot in America and the other in Japan. These areas all have there own social and economic problems and so this film is probabbly going to be different from the other 4 films. A non-diegetic sound is introduced from the begging. It is a sort of deep humming noise that helps in making the audience wary that something is about to happen. There is then another non diegetic sound. As letters come up on the bottom left hand side, typing noises are made which are usually associated with Sci-fi films which could show that this film is going to break conventions of a Action Thriller film. The teaser continues and a man gets out of the car that the camera was panning across and he goes to knock on a door. After this, the non-diegetic sound starts making a ticking sound which creates suspense as it seels as if the teaser is creating the pulse of the veiwer. As the man comes to the door to answer the ticking sound becomes quiter until he opens the door. That is when we see and hear a diegetic sound of a man trusting a gun into the character who opened the door. The scene continues with all the people in the room being rounded up by people in masks. Even with these mask on, the audience is able to see that there main protagonist (Dom) is part of what seems to be a wrong and violent act. This again breaks conventions of an assumed hero character for these films as he may have turned bad. This creates suspense as the audience start asking themselves, why has he gone bad? The scene ends with the protagonist Dom, lighting a load of money. This is again unconventional as usually thiefs take money but they are burning it. This could indicate that this film isn't going to conventional or like its previous 4 films. After this scene, the production company label appears followed  by an arriving plane. This could indicate to the audience that there is an arrival of an saviour or villian. After the low angle plane shot, the teaser moves on to conventional aspects of the genre to this film, action. We see and hear diegetic sounds of fighting. This generates excitement as fast paced action draws the attention of the audience and creates suspense on what is going to happen next. There is then a mid-shot of the back of a character who has gotten of the plane. The audience is quick to realise that another well known actor has been used in this production as the actor coming off the plane is The Rock (Dwayne Johnson). This again generates excitement and suspense as the audience are intrigued in what role does The Rock play in this film. After this we are then introduced to shots and mise-en-scene that have made these films quite sucessful. Fast cars. The use of fast cars attracts a wide range of audiences and just by using them in a production like this, it creates excitement as people love watching fast cars. The trailer continues for 4 seconds and Dom says 'Home sweet home.' The enxt sequence of shots are all car based chase scenes which create excitement and make the viewer want to continue watching the teaser trailer. As the car scenes are happening, there is a more upbeat non-diegetic sound which helps in making the mood more exciting and pass paced like the action being viewed by the audience. After a selection of action sequences, the first black screen comes up and says 'This model'. That could have something to do with the car model that is bieng used. I think its a clever way of sayin this year. This also shows that this trailer is conventional as it has a black screen, but the film itself may not be. After the black screen, the audience are introduced to some familiar faces only recogniseable from viewers of previous fast and furious films. This creates excitement for the audience as they have never seen all the characters for these films in one film. This makes the film even more unconventional from previous films. The next black screen comes up and states 'is fully loaded'. This could mean the car is fully loaded or the film is fully loaded by ket actors. During the black screens a non-diegetic sound of a car reving is being used which helps link the film back to cars and away from the viloence seen previously in the teaser trailer. There is then a low angle shot of 4 cars driving towards the camera. This again hints to the nature of the film. This is then followed by another Black screen with the title of the film on it. After this, there is another chase scene with a lot of action and a beaty non-diegetic soundtrack which helps grab the audiences attention at the end of the teaser as it comes to an end. The teaser ends with a black screen stating 'coming soon'. On a whole I beleive the teaser was conventional until the part after the Title. This is because it showed more action after the title when usually a teaser would show a small but fast scene or cut that leaves the audience on a cliffhanger but this film just promoted more action. This teaser shows too much action.

Poster

The poster for this film looks conventional and shows the main genre of the film, Action. The poster composes the protagonist, Dom, infront of the other protagonist. The whole image covers the background of the poster which could indicate the importance of action and violence in this film. The use of characters in different compositions indicates that one has a more powerful role than the other in the film. The themes are enforced by the use of red as the title font colour. The colour red is associated with violence, death, danger and so on. This helps enforce the action theme of the film also. Above the title, there are names of key actors for the film. This is a selling point for the production company. There is no logline or slogan on this poster which could have a connection with the film as the film is an all out action film. Finally, there is the section at the bottom of the poster that tells the audience the production company and crew that have been used to make this production. This poster is conventional and hints the themes of the film.

Magazine Cover

This product doen't have a magazine cover. This is because even though it is an Action film genre, it themes are based on cars. This is a niche theme and so it is not worth a big film magazine company making a magazine cover based on this film.

Comparison

The genre of the film is Action but it has some Thriller aspects. All these products convey the action genre well as they all show themes of action either by mise-en-scene or by editing and sound.
However the teaser trailer conveys themes that the film is going to be unconventional and so may not convey all the conventions of an Action genred film. Furthermore, as there is a lot to do with cars in these films, people may expected to see an image of a car on the poster. This again could hint that this film is going to be different to the other Fast and Furious film.

From these products, we can see that there is a common theme theme shown in both the teaser trailer and the poster of this film and so we should use the same concepts when we are making ou rown products.

Analysis of Empire magazine cover of Captain America

The Empire magazine cover which has Captain America on it's cover contains some conventions of a film magazine cover and other features which appeal to the audience the film is made for. We know that this magazine is an Empire magazine because the title of the magazine is clearly shown in the masthead. However, this masthead is not conventional. Readers of the Empire magazine will be able to see that for this edition, the colour of the magazine title has been changed. Conventionally, the magazine title is red, but in this edition, the title of the magazine is white. This could make this edition more difficult to find as readers may be looking for the red title more commonly used. The magazine title Empire maybe in a different colour on this occasion because it could hint the tone of the film. The colour white is usually associated with calm and harmonious atmospheres. The colour white could also suggest mystery. In the film, there is a calm atmosphere which is coated with Captain America's ambition to get into the army. The magazine cover has Captain America on the cover who is the main character from the film Captain America: The First Avenger. This is one of the conventions of a film magazine cover. This is effective as it shows to the audience the main character of the film and he is centred on the cover which draws attention to him. The main image is also in front of the background making it stand out. The centred image is also in front of the title Empire. Empire is a big magazine company but this magazine cover suggest that Captain America is bigger than anything on the page hence why he is composed in front of everything on the page apart for his own name. The background is the American flag which links to the name of the marvel hero and so links with the name of the well known marvel character. The effect of having a flag in the background can also suggest that Captain America is loyal to his country in the film and he obeys by the rules as most nations like America, run on human morals, rights and rules. Also the main figure is a well known actor Chris Evans. Having Chris Evans as the protagonist will help draw a wide range of fans of him as an actor. Also, more females maybe interested into the film because Chris Evans is the protagonist. There is also a yellow circle which says 'Meet Marvels First Avenger'. This indicates to the audience that there is probably an interview with Chris Evans inside the magazine which could inspire fans of him or the film to buy the magazine. There is also a slogan underneath Captain America which states 'How summer's biggest superhero went to war'. This creates a sort of hype towards the magazine as it excites the audience to want to read more about it in the magazine and find out more than what is on the cover.

Overall, the magazine cover is very centralised towards Captain America but there are small things on the cover like slogans and comments which draws the attention of the audience. For our film magazine cover, I think we should do the same type of image to draw the attention of our audience.

Analysis of Avengers Poster

This is the poster for the film Avengers Directed by Joss Whedon (2012). In this poster we can see the title of the film very clearly which is a key feature for a poster. This title is also key because this is a comic adaptation, the Avenger title needs to be big so that readers of the comics can recognise that this poster is for the Avengers film. The title is in a white/silver colour which suggest that the film is going to be a mysterious and probably an unconventional film as most action films have red or bright coloured title to try and show an action type tone. The poster also has an image with all the main good guys/hero's in the film. The use of this image is that everyone who has followed previous films will recognise that the characters are all Marvel hero's and they can understand that they have all come together as the poster illustrates them being in a war. Having the background as a battle ground with buildings falling and planes blowing up indicates to the audience that there hero's maybe going through a struggle and may even lose the fight that is clearly being portrayed. Also, as all the main characters are still in this image, it could indicate to the viewer that there hero's are earth last hope which could create excitement for certain viewers. There are also the names of the actors at the top of the poster as all the main characters are played by famous actors and so people may realise from the names who the actors are as they may have liked previous films by these actors. Big named actors are for some films a selling point and this poster is using this to there advantage. They have also composed the names right at the top of the poster which indicates that they aren't using the names as a selling point as it isn't in the centre of the poster. Another feature on the poster is that it has the date of release on it. This sometimes makes the viewer to pre-book a ticket for this date as they like the poster and are interested in watching the film. The date of release is surrounded by many names, these are the names of the production company and backstage crew. They have most probably been used as some people may  like films made by the production company or  the director and so want to go watch this film.
The main image gives and effect of war and so the genre and tone can be told from the poster to be a Action movie with most probably a huge action scene. The use of the title of the film being near the bottom of the poster but being very big is probably a good way for us to present our film title as it allows more attention to be given for the image above the title and that is the films biggest marketable aspect for the film.

The main concept in this poster is that it uses the key characters in the film that the audience relate to. This could help us when we are making our own poster as we can create characters that our audience can relate to and use there image as the centre of our poster. Also, the poster doesn't show the villain in this film and so leaves the villain as a mystery, we could also do this for our poster to create suspense.

Ideas

We have developed the idea about what happens when Richard is taken. We think it would be good for Richard to be interigated about his boss's buisness. We would have Richard in a dark room with a bright light shined onto him as he gets interigated. This is done in many films which puts Richard in the spot light and leaves everything in siluet. This is an idea we believe we most probably use in the teaser trailer or as the poster.

Analysis of Ice Age 4 Poster

This is the poster for the new Ice Age movie. This is a 'U' rated film so the poster has to be suitable for children and it has to appeal to children so that they can persuade there parents to go watch the film. The poster has a large image which has the main characters from all the previous films on a piece of ice, which has a central composition so the audience is attracted straight to the image. The audience behaves in this way because the image is central and big so it grabs there attention straight away. By having this image so large and in front of the title of the film, it shows that the poster designers have taught about how children relate to posters and children like big images and so the poster designs have made the choice of making the image composed in front of the title. This is humorous for older children but for the younger ages, the huge image allows them to recognise there favourite character from the film if they have seen the previous films. Other than the image, the poster has the name of the famous people that are going to be the voices of the characters in the film. This could be used to attract other target audiences. The background to the large image is a bright sky but with a soring tide. This creates an illusion between two different themes. The bright, blue sky could suggest that the film is happy and joyful but the soring tide could suggest that there could be a twist or an unexpected turn of events occurring in the film. However, the background could also seem humorous to younger age groups because all they will notice is their favourite characters on a piece of ice looking like they are going for a tidal ride. Also a key feature of posters is the title, which is very big so everyone can read it behind the characters, and the date of release. The title has been written in pieces of ice shaped in to letters. This relates to the film. The effect of the title being made of ice doesn't suggest the tone or the mood of the film which makes it more suitable for children as they won't understand how different colours make them feel and think. The title is large and at the top of the poster but it has a composition behind the image. This is because younger ages can not read and so they won't be appealed by the name. The date of release has been put in the centre bottom of both the posters I have analysed so far and so I think we should have the date of release around this area.

Compared to our own production, this poster is of a different genre. However it has a key theme of colour coordination. They are telling the tone of the film within the poster which is something we can enforce in our own poster. Although, to keep our audience in suspense, we will not hint to all the theme's in our production.

Analysis of Star Trek Total Film magazine cover

This is the magazine cover from Total Film for the film Star Trek Directed by J.J.Abrams (2009). The image used for this film is the image of Chris Pine who plays the role Jim Kirk. As Chris Pine is a famous actor and recogniseable face, the magazine have chosen to use his face to attract more people to read about the film. Also, the image has been composed so his nose is directly in the centre of the magazine cover. This is because he is the protagonist of the film and he is also the hero. If the image was related to previous Star Trek films, then only those who have watched previous Star Trek films will be able to recognise which film is being portrait and so there will be a niche target group so Chris Pine is used to widen the audience for the magazine. The character has also been put into siluet. This could be because the character is mysterious and so the magazine don't want to give his background away completely from their cover. The positioning of the text on the magazine cover is quite conventional. There is a masthead, sell line, an archrograge text and ends with the bar code. In the masthead, the magazine title is white which is contrasted to the rest of the writing in the masthead which are in red. This indicates that the readers of the magazine are meant to notice the text in red. The text in red in the masthead are all the new films coming out along with Star Trek. By having the text in red, it indicates that these words are more important selling points. The sell line is mainly towards the left side of the page in smaller font and in white. The sell line is more to the left because when the magazine is put on the shelf in newsagents and supermarkets, only the left side of the magazine cover can be seen. This magazine cover also shows a Z pattern on the cover which means everything that the magazine wants to get across to the readers is easily noticeable. In the bottom left corner, the magazine have let the readers know that there are other editions of the same magazine cover which can excite collectors. This part of the magazine is also red so again, this could be a big selling point for the magazine. The final part of the magazine cover is the anchorage text. In this area of text the magazine have used hyperbolic wording to catch the attention of the audience. The hyperbolic wording used is 'world exclusive'. The whole magazine only uses two colours which are red and white. This could hint to the audience that there is going to be danger or lust in the film and that the film is going to be mysterious which are connotations of both these colours.

As both our protagonist's have a mysterious background, we should consider using this idea for our magazine cover.

Ideas

In today's lesson, me and Emre discussed other themes and plots that will happen in the film we are making a teaser trailer, magazine cover and a poster for. We were thinking that if the boss of our main protagonist is a man who is involved with illegal dealings, then he must have a bodyguard or Hitman/Assassin who takes care of anyone who annoys him or gets in his way. By this character having a Hitman/Assassin who has a team that helps his buisness, these guys could be used in action scenes in the build up to finding Richard.
This will help us make our production more exciting and make the genre slightly change to Action/Thriler.

Analysis of Avengers Teaser Trailer

This is the official teaser trailer for the film The Avengers. The trailer starts in a conventional way and sets the surroundings. There is an establishing shot of a quite New York morning. In the background there is a dull, low key, numbing non-diegetic sound which creates a bit of suspense as there is nothing going on in the teaser trailer so far yet there is a dull non-diegetic sound in the background. The teaser continues with slow paced cuts as it shows an isolated and abandoned New York city. Whilst these slow paced cuts are being shown to the audience, there is a voice-over from one of the characters in the film. It is Loki who is speaking. Most demographic groups will know that Loki is the villain in this film and so it creates a sense of tension when they hear the villain speaking in the teaser trailer. With the transititons still relatively slow, we are then introduced to some explosions with people running and police everywhere. This shows the audience that there is going to be some sort of battle or some sort of danger.

After these few explosion and fighting frames, we are finally introduced to our hero's. The editing has become slightly faster and there is a more heroic tone to the music as the audience is attracted to all there hero's from previous films. This also creates the effect of there being hope for New York and that the city is not faced with being blown away as the beginning shots in the sequence suggest.

There is then a moment when the soundtrack stops and a voice over of the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D says 'What are you prepared to do about it?' The question is aimed at the hero's but this a rhetorical question for the audience which creates excitement and gets them thinking about what there hero's are going to do. This is followed by a twist. Instead of the teaser showing us more fighting and violent scenes where our hero's are defending the earth, the teaser chooses to show a twist within the film. It shows the team getting into a fight. This changes the mood of the film completely as the audience can see that their hero's don't do what they expect in the film. This change of mood is also enhanced by the fact that there is no soundtrack playing in the background and so this is a serious time for not only the film, but for what else may come up.
However, after this sort of twist to a traditional Action Thriller film, the conventions to an Action teaser appear as we see many stunts and explosions and fighting shots with the editing and pacing made much faster than any previous part in the trailer. This creates excitement and it makes all the shots on display more effective as the audience are drawn into the fast paced action of the teaser trailer. These fast paced cuts and editing are interrupted by a couple of black screens which just tell the audience when the film is coming out. Black screens are another convention of all types of trailers and this trailer has decided to use them. The black screens have not only been used to make the audience more aware of when the film is going to be released but it has also been used to space out all the action that the teaser shows. This is effective because showing the audience all the action at once may give them the idea that the hole film is going to be full of action.

The end of the teaser trailer is conventional as the pace of the editing has slowed down and there are more black screens. Although, the teaser doesn't end on a cliff hanger. Instead it ends on a humourous convosation for comic book readers. This could be done to show the audience that the film isn't just action and cliff hangers but it has a comedic aspect to it aswell which may attract a wider audience than just comic book fans and action film lovers.
